Legal
Kimberley James Heitman, B.Juris, LlB, AACS, MAICD, Barrister, Solicitor and Proctor, Supreme Court of Western Australia.
My Cannington legal practice was closed in July, 1999. I continue to maintain a record of the files of K Heitman & Co, especially those relating to wills. As I am employed by the University of Western Australia, I no longer conduct a general legal practice. I am available for consultancy work in the field of Internet governance, online legal issues and intellectual property.
I serve on the boards of a number of public companies and incorporated associations. Since the 1990s, I have been active in Internet associations including the Internet Community Hour, Electronic Frontiers Australia and the WA Internet Association and served on the boards of public companies iiNet Limited, AdultShop.com, Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Limited and Australian Domain Administration Limited.
I studied Law at the University of Western Australia and was admitted to practice in 1982. In 1984 I commenced my own legal practice in Cannington and practised in most areas of law; from 1990 I developed a professional interest in online legal issues and technology.
In 1999 I took on a role as Group Legal Counsel and CEO of iiNet Technologies Pty Ltd and continued on the Board of iiNet Limited following a successful public listing in 1999. In 2001, I left iiNet to work at the University of Western Australia as Intellectual Property Solicitor, and owing to the tragic illness of University Counsel Linda Key I was asked to take on the roles of Deputy Director, Legal Services and then Acting Director and Acting University Counsel. I was appointed as Director of Legal Services and University Lawyer in 2002, and in that capacity served as Director, Advanced Powder Technology Pty Ltd and Advanced Nano Technologies Pty Ltd and as the University's Public Interest Disclosure Officer and Freedom of Information Co-Ordinator.
In 2005 I stepped down from the boards of APT and ANT on the occasion of the successful public listing of Advanced Nanotechnology Limited. I was asked to join the boards of Tura New Music, and the Biennale of Electronic Arts, Perth.
I have been published and have lectured nationally on legal issues associated with new technology, and have appeared before several parliamentary inquiries and WA courts as an expert witness. I serve on the editorial board of the Privacy Law Bulletin and regularly write for that journal. I lecture regularly for UWA computer classes and research students on intellectual property and online issues.
